🍵 Matcha Body Scrub: A Recipe

Hello!

It has come to the season again where my skin feels dry and like it needs some care and exfoliation… and that means experimenting with a new body scrub recipe!

I have posted a few scrub recipes before…

…but this one has a new ingredient that I wanted to try: matcha powder.

This body scrub has the same base ingredients as the other body scrubs I had, where there’s approximately one part coconut oil and two parts sugar, but the matcha powder gives it a slightly different, softer texture, which I like!

I decided to try matcha powder to give the body scrub some smell, color, and health benefits. I have seen that matcha has quite a few different vitamins and healthy compounds, such as vitamin C and antioxidants, and I thought that may have a benefit on the skin. Aside from those things, it also has caffeine, which is known to help reduce the appearance cellulite and is a common ingredient in products meant to do just that. I think the combination of the caffeine with rubbing the scrub all over the skin, as well as the moisturizing coconut oil, makes for smoother looking and feeling skin!

One thing I will say about this scrub is it is a bit messy. The matcha is very pigmented, and it has the capacity to get all over the shower. Thankfully, it cleans up quickly and easily, but something else to take into account is the rinsing process. It is possible to have a greenish tint to parts of your body, especially around the areas where your skin bunches, like around your armpits (kind of like a fake tanner might do), so make sure to rinse thoroughly! For some people who have more pink or red skin they’d like to reduce the look of, this green tint might actually be a plus!

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup coconut oil, melted
  • 1 tablespoon matcha powder (can add more or less if you’d like!)
  • 1 cup sugar (or enough to create your desired consistency of scrub)
  • essential oils, if you’d like to add extra smell/ effects (I chose a few drops of lavender)

Directions:

  1. Heat up the coconut oil in the microwave until it’s turned into a liquid. Mix if you need to. The coconut oil being warm will help the matcha combine better into the scrub.

2. Add the matcha powder to the coconut oil. Mix until it is well combined.

3. Mix in your sugar, adding a bit at a time until you get the consistency you’d like. I would maybe go for a half cup at a time, then a quarter cup or a bit less.

4. Mix in the essential oils of your choosing, if applicable.

5. Transfer to a container you’d like it to stay in. Ready for use!

To use, just scrub gently all over your body like you would a soap and rinse! I would probably avoid the face, as it may be too harsh and I believe the coconut oil is comedogenic (can clog pores). The residue may be a bit oily of course, because it’s coconut oil, but it creates great moisture, and you won’t feel as cold as you get out of the shower or bath!

Do you think matcha powder is a good addition to a body scrub?

Happy exfoliating!
